June is Dry Heat Care Month:  A Regular Program for Hooves

Caring for a horse's hooves during the summer months requires particular attention due to changes in environmental conditions. Dry, hard ground can lead to brittle hooves that are prone to cracking and chipping. Regular moisturizing is crucial; applying hoof dressings or oils several times a week can help maintain hoof pliability and prevent excessive dryness. It's also important to ensure the horse has access to a shaded area or soft footing, like a stall with bedding, to escape the harshest sun and provide some relief from relentless hard surfaces.

Furthermore, increased activity and turnout often characterize summer for many horses. This can mean more wear and tear on the hooves. Regular farrier visits, typically every 4-6 weeks, become even more critical to trim away excess growth, balance the hoof, and address any chips or cracks before they worsen. A good farrier can also recommend specific shoeing or trimming strategies to mitigate the effects of dry ground, such as leaving a bit more length or using certain types of pads to absorb concussion and retain moisture.

Finally, while dry conditions are a primary concern, summer also brings with it potential for increased moisture if there are sudden downpours or access to wet areas like ponds or streams. Frequent transitions between wet and dry can also be detrimental, leading to expansion and contraction of the hoof capsule, which can weaken the hoof wall. Ensuring good stable hygiene, keeping stalls clean and dry, and allowing hooves to dry thoroughly after exposure to water are essential practices to prevent issues like thrush or white line disease that can thrive in moist, warm environments.  🐴
